The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) was founded in 1932 as an official program of The American Legion. Established during The American Legion National Convention in Portland, Oregon, the organization was created to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans by extending membership to their male descendants.
The SAL’s mission is to uphold the traditions and values of The American Legion while promoting patriotism, service, and community involvement. Over the decades, the organization has grown to include hundreds of thousands of members across the United States and beyond, supporting programs that assist veterans, military families, and youth.
Members of the Sons of The American Legion are actively involved in initiatives such as the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, veterans’ assistance programs, and community service projects. The organization also collaborates with The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary to advance charitable efforts, scholarship programs, and patriotic education.
With a deep commitment to "Service First," the Sons of The American Legion continues to play a vital role in supporting veterans and preserving the legacy of those who served.
