The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) was founded in 1919, shortly after the creation of The American Legion, to support its mission of serving veterans, military families, and communities. While The American Legion was established for veterans, their spouses, mothers, daughters, and sisters wanted to contribute as well, leading to the formation of the Auxiliary.
Mission Statement
In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.
Vision Statement
The vision of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion while becoming the premier service organization and foundation of every community providing support for our veterans, our military, and their families by shaping a positive future in an atmosphere of fellowship, patriotism, peace and security.
From its inception, the ALA has played a vital role in advocating for veterans' rights, promoting patriotism, and providing support to military families. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the largest patriotic women’s organizations in the world, with members actively involved in volunteer services, scholarships, youth programs, and legislative advocacy.
The ALA continues its mission today, working alongside The American Legion to honor the sacrifice of those who served, empower communities, and inspire future generations of Americans to uphold the values of service and patriotism.
With nearly 600,000 members nationwide, the American Legion Auxiliary remains one of the largest patriotic service organizations in the country. Its members continue to honor the legacy of those who served by volunteering, fundraising, and promoting patriotism in communities across the United States.
Today, the ALA invites all who share a commitment to patriotism, service, and supporting the military community to join and continue its proud legacy.
